The fabric of reality is warped by our actions, for better or worse. Certain creatures are very good at making things. Humans and paper wasps are two fine examples. We get better at what we actually practice on a regular basis. Everything else gradually fades away. It is really that simple. Let's start with several less savory aspects of this reality:
- Fighting develops skill at inflicting pain and death, while increasing the chance of suffering the same fate.
- Gazing at porn improves the skill of imagining strangers doing unlikely things that lead to foul diseases.
- Gorging on excessive food develops the skill of becoming fat and dying of related complications.
- Indulging needless depression eventually leads to mental illness and often ends in suicide.
- Sitting and watching television for hours enhances the skill of staring and being programmed by propaganda.
- Taking unnecessary drugs improves the skill of addiction while causing peculiar and eventually fatal side-effects.
So much for the nasty part; you get the idea. On the nicer side of things:
- Close attention to your development inevitably improves your confidence and skills.
- Machines and organizations built through diligent practice can enhance our existence.
- Skills honed through long hours of regular practice provide purpose and value.
So, invent what you choose to master and work with these skills regularly. Think about this. Choose what you do very carefully, for it is becoming your fate each day.
Your challenge is to look at lines 7 and 8 of the "Xaxerean Pattern". Follow the suggestions. Fill in your pursuits for these lines, focusing on your ability to do profitable things. On any day that "DESTINY" or "MASTERY" are to be pursued, study or do your corresponding "PURSUIT" during all free time. Have fun!
Suggestions and Review
- Make a copy of the XP image at Xaxeres. Study the key words very carefully. Decide on a personal pursuit that you think corresponds to each number on the "Xaxerean Pattern", based on the "deed", "principle" and "observation" key words. Take your best guess. Choose something that you would like to master. These pursuits will change as your life evolves. For some ideas, click on Author's Example
- Once you have finished your list and filled in the blanks, you will now own your personal "Xaxerean Pattern". Put it where you will remember it each evening.
- Before you go to bed, roll a twelve-sided die or use any method that randomly produces a number between one and twelve. Write down the resulting number and pursuit. Spend a few minutes before you go to sleep thinking about how you will pursue this activity the next day. Write down some notes if you get good ideas. The corresponding "pursuit" is what you will do during all free moments on the following day.
- When you wake up, quickly look at your pursuit for the day and at any notes you wrote before you went to sleep. If you had any dreams about it, make some notes. Think about what you want to accomplish. Spend all spare moments in your day doing something related to this pursuit. Think about today's "principle" as you go through the day. Watch your surroundings with today's "observation" in mind.
- If you wish to accelerate your progress and experience the full power of this system, here is the secret: Record today's thoughts and observations in a personal journal. Do this daily and keep it private. This is for you. Don't talk about it. If anyone asks, tell them honestly that you're just "keeping some notes". You will see the reason soon enough if you fail to do this.
- You may find that if people know what you're trying to accomplish, they may interfere with your progress either deliberately or for no apparent reason. It happens. This can best be avoided by being quietly effective, unless you need help with specific projects. Ask when you must, but be very careful.
- At the end of each month read through your daily entries, think about what has happened, and record your reactions in a special monthly entry. Mark it well, perhaps with a colored pen so that you can find it easily.
- At the end of each year, read the monthly entries, consider what has happened over the year, and write an annual entry after some serious thought.
- Read your growing collection of annual entries each year. Watch yourself evolve.
- Accept that your journal may be destroyed, lost, or stolen at some point. Laugh and start over. Enjoy your life and enjoy the show!
